Maximilian Schiffer studied business administration and electrical power engineering at RWTH Aachen University, and received his doctoral degree in operations research from RWTH Aachen in 2017. His thesis, entitled, “Logistics Networks with Intermediate Stops: Designing Innovative and Green Solutions”, was supervised by Gilbert Laporte (HEC Montréal) and Michael Schneider. Maximilian has won a number of awards for his research, e.g., the INFORMS TSL dissertation prize and the dissertation prize of the German Operations Research Society. After finishing his thesis, he became an associate member of GERAD in 2017. In 2018, he held a postdoctoral position at RWTH Aachen University and a visiting scholar position in the Autonomous Systems Laboratory at Stanford University. In September 2018, Professor Schiffer was appointed as faculty member in the Operations and Supply Chain Management Department of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) School of Management and in TUM’s newly created Center for Energy Markets.
Maximilian’s research spans across different fields of operations research and management science. These include a wide range of transportation and logistics topics (e.g., electric vehicles and autonomous systems) but also topics of production planning, supply chain management and data science. In these fields, Maximilian develops state-of-the-art algorithms that are suitable for real-world applications. Currently Maximilian is focusing especially on coordination mechanisms and real-time algorithms for autonomous mobility-on-demand (AMoD) fleets, while also considering interactions with the power network or public transport. Additionally, he designs exact algorithms for picker routing that are amenable to real-time applications. Furthermore, he works on various topics at the interface between neural networks and integer programming.
Associate member of GERAD since December 2017
